Description
The Wisnia Nadwislanka PDO is a sour cherry from a tree coming from Rosaceae Juss. family, Prunoideae species, Prunus type and Cerasus subtype, in the cherry tree variety which is typical of the Vistula area, coming from the tree of the Prunus fruticosa Pall species, whose name has not an equivalent in Latin.
Production Area
The production area of Wisnia Nadwislanka PDO covers some municipal areas in the Lipsko district, in the Masovian Voivodeship; two municipal areas in the Opatów district in the Swietokrzyskie Voivodeship, and, finally, in the municipal area of Annopol, in the Krasnik district in the Lublin Voivodeship.
Production Method
Wisnia Nadwislanka is a variety of shrubby cherry tree which reproduces itself through offshoots. The grounds dedicated to the cultivation of shrubs must be characterised by clayey calcareous soils. The trees obtained from the offshoots, which are removed from the fifth year of cultivation, are planted on an area that must measure at least 8 sq. m. per every single tree. The fruit for direct consumption must be hand-harvested in July, whilst the ones for processing have to be stalk-free harvested, when the peel acquires the final colour.
Appearance and Flavour
Wisnia Nadwislanka PDO has a roundish shape, slightly flattened, with a diameter of 12-20 mm and a weight of 1.6 to 3.3 gr; the colour is strong and spans from dark red to burgundy. The fruit, which has a smaller size than the other local varieties, is characterised by a very strong aroma and taste, slightly sour.
History
At the beginning, the cherry trees were cultivated in the limited area of Slupia Nadbrzezna, on the Vistula riversides. Over time, these fruit trees spread in the entire valley along the river, and they were named Wisnia Nadwislanka, meaning sour cherry from Vistula due to their presence in the Vistula area - in Poland Wisla.
Gastronomy
Wisnia Nadwislanka PDO has to be stored either in a cool and dry place or preferably in refrigerator. They are very good when eaten fresh, but the very high quality and special organoleptic features of this fruits make them ideal to produce juices, syrups and precious jams.
Marketing
The product is sold as Wisnia Nadwislanka PDO. It is packed both for direct consumption, in packages weighing from 0.5 to 5 kg, and for processing industry, in suitable boxes with a maximum weight of 13 kg.
