Description of product typologies
Vernaccia di Oristano PDO Bianco is yellow-amber, almost golden; the nose reveals characteristic fragrances of dried apricot, prune, aromatic herbs, almond and roasted hazelnut, with balsamic hints and aromas of orange peel and honey; it is warm and embracing on the palate, supported by good alcoholicity and freshness, with an almondy finish. It can display Superiore and Riserva on the label. Vernaccia di Oristano PDO Liquoroso is golden yellow with yellow-amber hues; the nose releases an array of sensations ranging from intense dried fruit to aromatic notes of honey and vanilla; it is decisive, sweet and well-structured on the palate. Before filtration and eventual clarification, the wine is transferred into chestnut or oak barrels in March of the year following that of the grape harvest, where it is left to age for at least two years, commencing from the date it was transferred. The cellars in which the wines are aged must be ventilated to protect the barrels from external temperatures. After the first transferal, Vernaccia di Oristano PDO can be used to make Vernaccia di Oristano PDO Liquoroso wine, exclusively by adding wine-based alcohol or wine-based substances or wine spirits. The product is then transferred to chestnut or oak barrels where it is left to age for a minimum of two years. Vernaccia di Oristano PDO Bianco may qualify as a Superiore wine if it has been aged for a minimum period of three years and has a minimum natural alcohol level of 15.5% vol. when it is released for consumption. Vernaccia di Oristano PDO Bianco Superiore wine can also qualify as Riserva if the wine has been aged in kegs for a minimum period of four years.
