Description
The Venezia PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Semi-Sparkling White, Red, Rosato or Rosé, Semi-Sparkling Rosé, Spumante, Rosé Spumante and White Passito. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Venezia PDO is within the entire territory of the provinces of Venice and Treviso, in the Veneto region.
Description of product typologies
Venezia PDO Bianco is straw-yellow, at times with greenish or golden reflections; it is intense and characteristic on the nose; the taste is harmonious and dry. Venezia PDO Bianco Frizzante is straw-yellow and has fine, elegant foam; the nose reveals dense fragrances of white and yellow flowers, freshly cut grass and fresh fruit; it ranges from dry to semi-sweet on the palate, offering a pleasant and harmonious flavour reminiscent of the nose. Venezia PDO Rosso is ruby red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; the nose oozes floral and fruity aromas of rose, pansy and ripe cherry; it is structured, harmonious and velvety on the palate, with intense fruity and spicy notes. It can display Riserva on the label. Venezia PDO Rosato or Rosé is pink, varying in softness; the nose offers captivating delicate fragrances of fruit; it is harmonious and lively on the palate, ranging from dry to medium-sweet, offering jammy aromas of rose and blackberry. Venezia PDO Rosato or Rosé is pink, varying in softness, and has fine, persistent foam; the nose is delicate with fruity hints; it is harmonious and velvety on the palate, offering a flavour that ranges from dry to medium-sweet. Venezia PDO Spumante is straw-yellow, varying in intensity, and has fine, persistent foam; the nose is delicate and rich with fruity and salty sensations; it is harmonious and fresh on the palate, offering a flavour that ranges from brut to demi-sec. Venezia PDO Spumante Rosé is pink, varying in softness, and has fine, persistent foam; the nose bursts with fragrances of raspberry and rose, blending with a delicate hint of yeast; it is harmonious and fresh on the palate, offering a flavour that ranges from brut to demi-sec. Venezia PDO Passito Bianco is golden yellow, varying in intensity and at times yellow-amber; the nose is intense with hints of dried grape; the taste is sweet and harmonious on the palate. Venezia PDO Rosato or Rosé wine is obtained by softly pressing the grapes, followed by a short period of maceration to ensure the wine acquires the desired colour. The vinification and production processes of Venezia PDO Spumante and Frizzante wines must take place within the Veneto region and in the territory of the provinces of Udine and Pordenone. Venezia PDO Rosso Riserva cannot be released for consumption before 24 months after November 1st of the year in which the grapes are harvested. Venezia PDO Passito Bianco cannot be released for consumption before 12 months after November 1st of the year in which the grapes are harvested.
Grape variety specifications
The Venezia PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Chardonnay (incl. Spumante and Semi-Sparkling), Manzoni Bianco, Sauvignon, Verduzzo (incl. Passito), Pinot Bianco, Tai da Tocai Friulano, Traminer (incl. Spumante), Pinot Grigio (incl. Rosé, Spumante, Semi-Sparkling, Rosé Spumante and Semi-Sparkling Rosé), Pinot (only for Spumante, from white vinified Pinot Grigio and/or Pinot Bianco and/or Pinot Nero), pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Merlot (incl. Riserva), Cabernet Sauvignon (incl. Riserva), Cabernet Franc, Carmenère, Cabernet (incl. Riserva), Malbech (incl. Riserva), Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso (incl. Riserva), Pinot Nero, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From two white grape varieties: Verduzzo (from Verduzzo Friulano and/or Trevigiano) and/or Tai and/or Chardonnay and/or Manzoni Bianco and/or Pinot Bianco. From two white grape varieties (incl. Spumante and Semi-Sparkling): Chardonnay with Glera or Verduzzo or Tai or Pinot Bianco or Pinot Nero (white vinified). From red and white grape varieties: Pinot Rosato or Rosé (only as Spumante, from min. 50% Pinot Grigio and/or Pinot Bianco and 5-50% Pinot Nero). The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
Additional specifications
The colour of Venezia Protected Designation of Origin Rosso, Bianco, Bianco Spumante and Bianco Frizzante wines does not need to be indicated on the label. The label of Venezia PDO Pinot Grigio wines, including Spumante and Frizzante, can display a reference to the rosé colour, or its synonyms (blush, ramato, etc.).
