Production Area
The production area of Valsusa PDO is within the entire administrative territory of the municipalities of Almese, Borgone di Susa, Bruzolo, Bussoleno, Caprie, Chianocco, Chiomonte, Condove, Exilles, Giaglione, Gravere, Mattie, Meana di Susa, Mompantero, Rubiana, San Didero, San Giorio di Susa, Susa and Villarfocchiardo in the Province of Turin, in the Piedmont region.
Description of product typologies
Valsusa PDO Rosso is ruby red, varying in intensity and at times with orangey reflections; the nose opens with fragrances of berries, followed by fresh and slightly spicy sensations; it is light-bodied and delicately fruity on the palate, with an aromatic aftertaste of almond and dried fruit. The vinification processes of Valsusa Protected Designation of Origin wines must be carried out within the production area; however, taking traditional production circumstances into consideration, these operations may also be carried out within the territory of the following municipalities adjacent to the production area: Cesana Torinese, Claviere, Moncenisio, Oulx, Salbertrand, Sauze d’Oulx, Sauze di Cesana, Sestriere, Avigliana, Caselette, Novalesa, Chiusa San Michele, Sant’Ambrogio, Sant’Antonino, Vaie, Venaus, Villar Dora.
Grape variety specifications
The Valsusa PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Avanà, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%; min. 85% Becuet, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Baratuciat, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. Valsusa PDO Avanà is light ruby red, with orangey reflections; the nose is fruity, at times with vegetal notes; the taste is dry, harmonious, acidulous, and mildly tannic on the palate, finishing with an almondy note. The Valsusa PDO Becuet is deep ruby red with purplish reflections; the nose is intense, fruity and fine; it is dry, harmonious and sapid on the palate, at times mildly tannic. Valsusa PDO Baratuciat is straw-yellow, varying in intensity and with greenish reflections; the nose is intense with floral and fruity notes; it is sapid and harmonious on the palate, at times acidulous and dry.
