Description
The Valdadige PDO (Etschtaler PDO in German) is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé and Semi-Sparkling (only with a grape variety specification). The Designation also incorporates four grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Valdadige PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the autonomous Province of Bolzano, the autonomous Province of Trento and the Province of Verona, in the Veneto region.
Description of product typologies
Valdadige PDO Bianco is straw-yellow; the nose reveals fruity fragrances of plum and white fruit, floral notes and hints of mountain herbs; it is dry on the palate, at times semi-sweet, fresh and moderately acidulous. Valdadige PDO Rosso is ruby red, varying in intensity; the nose reveals pleasant fragrances of ripe red fruit, with a faint trace of spiciness; it is full, harmonious and complex on the palate, with a strong note of cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant. Valdadige PDO Rosato is pink, varying in intensity; the nose displays delicate tones of pansy and red-berried fruit, accompanied by notes of almond cinnamon and vanilla; it is pleasant, smooth and fruity on the palate, with delicate aromas of rose jam.
Grape variety specifications
The Valdadige PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Chardonnay (incl. Semi-Sparkling), Pinot Bianco (incl. Semi-Sparkling), Pinot Grigio, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Schiava (Schiava Grossa and/or Schiava Gentile and/or Schiava Grigia), pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin. Valdadige PDO Chardonnay and Valdadige PDO Pinot Bianco wines can also be produced as semi-sparkling, on the condition that they are obtained exclusively through natural secondary fermentation.
Additional specifications
The Valdadige PDO designation can be followed by the specification Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym. Inter-regional PDOs: Valdadige PDO is produced with the same characteristics in the autonomous Province of Bolzano, the autonomous Province of Trento and the Province of Verona, in the Veneto region.
