Description
The Valcalepio PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White and Red; Red Passito (only with specification of grape variety). The Designation also incorporates one grape variety specification.
Production Area
The production area of Valcalepio PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Bergamo, in the Lombardy region.
Description of product typologies
Valcalepio PDO Bianco is yellow in colour, varying in intensity; the nose is floral and fruity, with dense aromas of Golden Delicious and vaguely reminiscent of wild apples; the sensations of the nose return on the palate accompanied by a dry, fresh and harmonious flavour. Valcalepio PDO Rosso has a ruby-red colour with crimson highlights; the nose reveals fragrances of cherry and blackcurrant which lead to a spicy and aromatic finish; it is jammy on the palate, with a decisive, fine and persistent flavour. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has been aged for a minimum period of 3 years, of which at least 1 year must be in oak barrels; the ageing period commences the first November following the production of the grapes. Before being released for consumption, Valcalepio PDO Rosso wines must be aged for a minimum period of one year, of which at least 3 months must be in wooden barrels, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced.
Geographical and sub-area specifications
The following municipalities can be indicated on the label of Valcalepio PDO Moscato Passito wines, exclusively in order to indicate wines of the same typology obtained with grapes produced in these areas: Gandosso, Grumello del Monte, Cenate Sotto, Torre de’ Roveri, Albano Sant’Alessandro and Carobbio degli Angeli.

The Valcalepio PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From red grape varieties: 100% Muscat di Scanzo or Muscat.Valcalepio Moscato Passito has a ruby-red colour, varying in depth, with garnet highlights; the nose reveals fragrances of dried roses, marasca cherry jam, sage and acacia honey on a smooth spicy background; it is sweet and smooth on the palate, with long aromatic persistence.Valcalepio PDO Moscato Passito cannot be released for consumption before May 12th of the second year following that in which the grapes were produced.
