The Val di Magra PGI is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red and Rosé. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Val di Magra PGI is within parts of the territory of the municipalities of Fivizzano, Casola in Lunigiana, Aulla, Licciana Nardi, Tresara, Villafranca in Lunigiana, Podenzana, Pontremoli, Filattiera, Mullazzo, Bagnone, Fosdinovo, Carrara, Massa and Montignoso in the Province of Massa-Carrara, in the Tuscany region.
Description of product typologies
Val di Magra PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose offers fragrances of apricot, peach, citrus fruit and floral notes; it is sapid and rich on the palate, with a densely floral finish. Val di Magra PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby red; the nose is reminiscent of small berries, myrtle and wisteria, accompanied by hints of spicy notes; it is dry, pleasantly tannic and balanced on the palate. Val di Magra PGI Rosato, alone or with specification of grape variety, is a nicely intense pink colour; the nose is reminiscent of cyclamen, small ripe fruit, blueberry and spices, accompanied by vegetal notes; it is fresh and smooth on the palate, with a fruity finish.
Grape variety specifications
The Val di Magra PGI with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding varieties. A maximum of 15% of grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. Reference to the names of two grape varieties is permitted in the designation and presentation of Val di Magra PGI wines, on the condition that the wine derives exclusively from grapes produced by the two specified varieties; the quantity of grapes produced by one of the two varieties must in any case be greater than 15% of the total. Val di Magra PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
