The production area of Tharros PGI is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Oristano, in the Sardinia region.
Description of product typologies
Tharros PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is various shades of yellow; the nose offers fragrances of flesh flowers, broom and cut grass; it is fresh and lively on the palate, with citrusy tones and a long finish, ranging from dry to sweet. It can also be produced as semi-sparkling wine. Tharros PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is fairly intense ruby red; the nose reveals fragrances of cherry and blackberry, marasca cherry, hay, tobacco and chocolate; it is energetic and fresh on the palate, with a tannic lift and a fruity finish ranging from dry to sweet. It can also be produced as semi-sparkling wine. Tharros PGI Rosato, alone or with specification of grape variety, varies from pale to deep pink; the nose displays fragrances of fresh flowers, with vegetal and fresh floral hints; it is lively, fresh and harmonious on the palate, with tones ranging from dry to sweet. It can also be produced as semi-sparkling wine. Tharros PGI Novello is ruby red with intense purplish reflections; the nose reveals fragrances of red fruit, with spicy hints of cinnamon and clove; it is medium-bodied, rounded and smooth on the palate, offering flavours revealing notes ranging from dry to medium-sweet.
Grape variety specifications
The Tharros PGI with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Sardinia region, excluding the Cannonau, Carignano, Girò, Malvasia, Monica, Moscato, Nasco, Nuragus, Semidano, Vermentino and Vernaccia varieties, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding varieties. A maximum of 15% of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. Tharros PGI wines with specification of grape varieties can also be produced as semi-sparkling Novello wine, the latter only obtained from red grape varieties. Tharros PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
