Description
The Tarantino PGI is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, White Passito, Red Passito, White Uve Stramature (overripe grape), Red Uve Stramature, Red Novello and Rosé Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Tarantino PGI is within the entire territory of the Province of Taranto, in the Apulia region.
Description of product typologies
Tarantino PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of variety, is straw-yellow; mineral and salty aromas develop on the nose, revealing fragrances of apricot, straw and oriental spices; it is fresh and sapid on the palate, with a range of expressions from dry to medium-sweet. It can also be produced as semi-sparkling wine. Tarantino PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of variety, varies from ruby red to garnet red; the nose reveals a variety of sensations ranging from black cherry syrup to plum, and from grassy to minerally notes; it is embracing and balanced on the palate, with fruity undertones and sensations varying from dry to medium-sweet. It can also be produced as semi-sparkling wine. Tarantino PGI Rosato, alone or with specification of variety, is pink; the nose displays fragrances ranging from violet to sweet spices, and from cranberry to citrus fruit; it is fresh, smooth and persistent on the palate. It can also be produced as semi-sparkling wine. Tarantino PGI Passito Bianco, alone or with specification of variety, is intense yellow to golden yellow; the nose offers delicate fruity notes; it is harmonious on the palate, ranging from dry to sweet. Tarantino PGI Passito Rosso, alone or with specification of variety, is ruby red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; the nose offers characteristic, delicate and persistent fragrances; the sensations on the palate range from dry to sweet. Tarantino PGI Uve Stramature Bianco, alone or with specification of variety, ranges from straw-yellow to golden yellow; the nose reveals delicate, persistent fragrances of ripe fruit; the sensations on the palate range from dry to sweet. Tarantino PGI Uve Stramature Rosso, alone or with specification of variety, is ruby red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; the nose is delicate and persistent, offering hints ranging from brushwood to leather; the flavours are typical of ripe fruit and range from sweet to dry. Tarantino PGI Novello Rosso, alone or with specification of variety, is ruby red; the nose is intense and pleasant; the taste reveals characteristic notes within a sensorial range that varies from dry to medium-sweet. Tarantino PGI Novello Rosato, alone or with specification of variety, is pink; the nose bursts with the typical notes of the grape; it is harmonious on the palate, ranging from dry to medium-sweet. Grapes destined for the production of Tarantino PGI Passito and Uve Stramature wines can be also be dried on the vines.
Grape variety specifications
The Tarantino PGI, with specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Apulia region, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding varieties. A maximum of 15% of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. Tarantino PGI wines with specification of one of the authorised varieties can also be produced as semi-sparkling, Passito, Rosé and Novello wines, the latter only with red grapes. Tarantino PGI can also be produced as “Vino da Uve Stramature” originating from Late Harvest wine. Tarantino PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
