Description
The Suvereto PDO is reserved exclusively for Red wine. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Suvereto PDO is within the entire territory of the municipality of Suvereto in the Province of Livorno, in the Tuscany region.
Description of product typologies
Suvereto PDO is intense, bright ruby red, tending towards garnet red; the nose bursts with fruity notes of ripe mixed berries, liqueur fruit, leather and chocolate; it is dry and velvety on the palate, with good body and at times a woody aftertaste. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has been aged for a minimum period of 24 months, of which at least 18 months must be in oak barrels; the ageing period commences November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Suvereto PDO wines, including those with specification of grape variety, cannot be released for consumption before June 1st of the second year following that in which the grapes were produced; for Riserva wines the release date is January 1st of the third year following that in which the grapes were produced.

The Suvereto PDO can also be accompanied by additional geographical specifications referring to municipalities, districts, farms and localities within the production area and from where the grapes used to produce the wine effectively originate.
Grape variety specifications
The Suvereto PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From red grape varieties (incl. Riserva): min. 85% Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin. Suvereto PDO Sangiovese, Suvereto PDO Merlot and Suvereto PDO Cabernet Sauvignon wines qualify as Riserva if they have been aged for a minimum period of 24 months, of which at least 18 months must be in oak barrels. The ageing period commences November 1st of the year in which the grapes are produced.

The Suvereto PDO designation can be followed by the specification Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym.
