Description
The Spoleto PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White; Spumante and Passito (only with specification of grape variety). The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Spoleto PDO is within the entire territory of the Municipality of Montefalco, and parts of the municipalities of Campello sul Clitunno, Castel Ritaldi, Foligno, Spoleto and Trevi in the Province of Perugia, in the Umbria region.
Description of product typologies
Spoleto PDO Bianco has a straw-yellow colour; the nose opens with fruity notes of apple, pear and medlar which evolve into aromas of minerals and hazelnut; it is sapid and fruity on the palate, with a pleasing fresh vein. Spoleto PDO Spumante and Passito wines with specification of grape variety have the organoleptic properties that are typical of the grapes and terroir of origin.
Grape variety specifications
The Spoleto PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties (incl. Superiore, Spumante, Passito): min. 85% Trebbiano spoletino, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.Spoleto PDO Trebbiano spoletino Spumante belonging to the “vino spumante di qualità” (quality sparkling wine) category must be produced with either the Charmat Method or the Classico Method. The initial drying of grapes destined for the production of Spoleto PDO Trebbiano spoletino Passito may be carried out with the aid of unheated ventilated air. The traditional oenological practices of the area may be used in the vinification stages; maturing and vinification can take place in wooden recipients.For Spoleto PDO Trebbiano spoletino Superiore there is a mandatory ageing period of 3 months in bottles.
