The production area of Siracusa PDO is within the entire territory of the municipality of Siracusa in the Province of Siracusa, in the Sicily region.
Description of product typologies
Siracusa PDO Bianco ranges from straw-yellow to soft golden-yellow; the nose is fine and elegant, revealing predominant fruity notes; it is dry on the palate, yet with well-balanced aromaticity leading to a persistent finish. Siracusa PDO Rosso is ruby-red, varying in intensity; the nose offers fruity fragrances of red fruit and brushwood; it is warm, embracing, persistent and pleasantly tannic on the palate, with an appreciable dry aftertaste. Siracusa PDO Passito is intense golden-yellow, with evident amber hues; the nose displays a wide range of sensations such as white flowers, dates, candied orange, coffee and honey; the sweet and embracing attack on the palate is wrapped in fresh acidity and fruity notes, creating a vigorous, harmonious and velvety flavour. Siracusa PDO Passito wines must be made from grapes that have been dried on the vines or after the harvest. The organoleptic properties of Siracusa PDO Spumante wines with specification of grape variety are typical of the grapes and terroir of origin.
Grape variety specifications
The Siracusa PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties (incl. Spumante): min. 85% Moscato Bianco, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other aromatic grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Nero d’Avola, Syrah, pure or with the addition of grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
Additional specifications
The Siracusa PDO designation can be followed by the specification Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym. Siracusa PDO Passito wines can display “vino ottenuto da uve appassite al sole” (wine obtained from sun-dried grapes) on the label if the grapes have been dried entirely in the sun.
