Description of product typologies
Sforzato di Valtellina PDO or Sfursat di Valtellina PDO is a characteristic ruby-red, at times with reflections that tend towards garnet red; the nose reveals intense, warm and spicy fragrances, and is rich with notes of mixed berries and resin; it is smooth, dry, alcoholic and velvety on the palate, with an intensely aromatic, full flavour and hints of spices and wood. Sforzato di Valtellina PDO or Sfursat di Valtellina PDO wine can be released for consumption after it has undergone a minimum ageing and maturing period of 20 months, of which at least 12 months must be in wooden barrels; the ageing and maturing period commences April 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were harvested. The vinification of the dried grapes suitable for producing Sforzato di Valtellina or Sfursat di Valtellina Protected Designation of Origin wines can only start from December 1st. The Lombardy Region can authorise the aforementioned process to begin earlier than December 1st should climatic conditions make it necessary.
