The Salemi PGI is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé and Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Salemi PGI is within the entire territory of the Municipality of Salemi in the Province of Trapani, in the Sicily region.
Description of product typologies
Salemi PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, has a straw-yellow colour; the nose is typically fruity with notes of wild flowers and brine; the intense sensations of the nose return on the palate which is dry and sapid. It can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling wine. Salemi PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby-red in colour, acquiring a deeper tone with ageing; the nose displays a complex range of fragrances from ripe red fruit and fruits of the forest to grassy and spicy notes; it is elegant, fruity and typical on the palate, with an evolution that can be traced to grape variety used. It can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling and Novello wine. Salemi PGI Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, is cherry-pink in colour, varying in intensity; the nose reveals aromas of red fruit, pansy and delicate fruit; it is sapid and dry on the palate, although the fruitiness tends to smoothen the flavour. It can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling wine.
Grape variety specifications
The Salemi PGI with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the municipality of Salemi, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, for at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. Grapes similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%, can contribute, pure or combined, to the production of the above-mentioned musts and wines. The Salemi PGI with the specification of two grape varieties is reserved for wines, including Semi-Sparkling, obtained from corresponding grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, on the condition that the wine derives exclusively from the indicated grapes, and that the quantity of grapes produced by each of the varieties is higher than 15% of the total. The grape varieties must be indicated on the label in descending order, in respect to the actual contribution of the grape.Salemi PGI with specification of one or two grape varieties can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling wines.Salemi PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the grape variety, as well as the indicated characteristics for the typology of wine.
