The Romangia PGI is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Passito, Uve Stramature (Overripe Grapes) and Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Romangia PGI is within the territory of the municipalities of Castelsardo, Osilo, Sennori, Sorso and Valledoria in the Province of Sassari, in the Sardinia region.
Description of product typologies
Romangia PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, varies from paper white to amber-yellow; the floral and fruity fragrances on the nose express the grape varieties used; it is intense on the palate, varying from dry to sweet, yet always offering the fruity and minerally flavours which are typical of the terroir of origin. It can also be produced as a semi-sparkling wine. Romangia PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, ranges from soft ruby red to garnet red; the nose displays intense fragrances of woodland flowers and notes of blueberry, at times be strong; it is intense, warm, rich and mellow on the palate, ranging from dry to sweet. It can also be produced as a semi-sparkling wine. Romangia PGI Rosato ranges from pale to deep pink; the fruity fragrances of the nose blend into fresh floral sensations; the delicate fruity flavour is simple, ranging from dry to sweet. It can also be produced as a semi-sparkling wine. Romangia PGI Passito varies from yellow to amber; the nose is characteristic; it ranges from dry to sweet on the palate. Romangia PGI Uve Stramature varies from yellow to amber; the aromas are typical of ripe fruit; it ranges from dry to sweet on the palate. Romangia PGI Novello varies from red with purple reflections to ruby red; the nose is fruity, characteristic of young wines; it ranges from dry to medium-sweet on the palate.
Grape variety specifications
The Romangia PGI with specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Sardinia region, excluding the Cannonau, Carignano, Girò, Malvasia, Monica, Moscato, Nasco, Nuragus, Semidano, Vermentino and Vernaccia varieties, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding varieties. A maximum of 15% of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Sardinia region can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. Romangia PGI wines with the specification of a white grape variety can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling, Uve Stramature and Passito wines; if the wine is obtained from a red grape variety it can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling and Novello. In the designation of Romangia PGI wines, reference may be made to the names of two grape varieties, excluding Cannonau, Carignano, Girò, Malvasia, Monica, Moscato, Nasco, Nuragus, Semidano, Vermentino and Vernaccia, provided that the wine derives exclusively from the two specified grape varieties and that the minor variety is no less than 15% of the total. Romangia PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
