The Romagna PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, White Spumante, Rosé Spumante, Semi-Sparkling White, Semi-Sparkling Rosé; Sweet Spumante, Red Passito, Semi-Sparkling Red and Novello (all only with specification of grape variety). The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety and geographical specifications.

The production area of Romagna PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Provinces of Forlì-Cesena, Ravenna, Rimini and Bologna, in the Emilia-Romagna region.
Description of product typologies
Romagna PDO Bianco ranges from light yellow to straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the fragrance is light, delicate and pleasant; it is sapid and harmonious on the palate. Romagna PDO Rosso is ruby red, at times with violet reflections; it is vinous on the nose with a decisive aroma; it is harmonious and slightly tannic on the palate, with a pleasantly bitter aftertaste. Romagna PDO Rosato is pink, varying in intensity; the fragrance is light, delicate and pleasant; it is fresh and harmonious on the palate. Romagna PDO Spumante Bianco is straw-yellow, varying in intensity, and has a fine, persistent perlage; the nose offers light, delicate fragrances; it is sapid on the palate, harmonious in wines ranging from brut nature to dry. Romagna PDO Spumante Rosato is pink, varying in intensity, and has a fine, persistent perlage; the nose offers light, delicate fragrances; it is sapid on the palate, harmonious in wines ranging from brut nature to dry. Romagna PDO Frizzante Bianco ranges from light yellow to straw-yellow, varying in intensity, and has fine, persistent foam; the fragrance is pleasant and characteristic; it is harmonious and fresh on the palate. Romagna PDO Frizzante Rosato is pink, varying in intensity, and has fine, persistent foam; the fragrance is pleasant and characteristic; it is harmonious and fresh on the palate. Romagna PDO Spumante Bianco and Romagna PDO Spumante Rosé wines must be obtained through fermentation in the bottle, according to the traditional method or Classico method, or natural fermentation in autoclaves. Romagna PDO Spumante Dolce, Romagna PDO Passito Rosso, Romagna PDO Frizzante Rosso and Romagna PDO Novello wines with specification of grape variety have the organoleptic properties that are typical of the grapes and terroir of origin.
Geographical and sub-area specifications
The Romagna PDO Pagadebit can be accompanied by the sub-geographical designation Romagna PDO Pagadebit Bertinoro, which is reserved exclusively for Dry, Semi-Sweet, Dry Semi-Sparkling and Semi-Sweet Semi-Sparkling White wines produced with a minimum of 85% Bombino Bianco, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. Romagna PDO Sangiovese, with or without Riserva on the label, can be accompanied by the following geographical sub-designations: Romagna PDO Sangiovese (incl. The Romagna PDO Bianco may be accompanied by the geographical sub-designation Romagna PDO Bianco Brisighella, reserved for white wines produced with a minimum of 60% Trebbiano; a maximum of 40% of Albana and Chardonnay may be used, individually or combined.

From white grape varieties: Albana (Spumante Dolce): min. 95% Albana, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 5%; Pagadebit (incl. Semi-Sparkling): min. 85% Bombino Bianco pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%; Trebbiano (incl. Spumante, Semi-Sparkling): min. 85% Trebbiano Romagnolo, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: Cagnina: min. 85% Cagnina, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%; Sangiovese (incl. Superiore, Riserva, Superiore Riserva, Passito, Novello: min. 85% Sangiovese, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. Romagna PDO Albana Spumante Dolce is bright golden yellow; the nose displays aromas of yeasts and honey, with pleasant fruity sensations of peach, almond and candied orange; it is sweet, pleasant and velvety on the palate. Romagna PDO Albana Spumante wines must be obtained through fermentation/secondary fermentation in the bottle (Classico method/traditional method) or in autoclaves; the fermentation of the must can also take place in wooden recipients, including partially. Romagna PDO Cagnina is purplish-ruby red; the fragrance is vinous and characteristic; it is sweet on the palate, with good body, slightly tannic and acidulous. Romagna PDO Pagadebit is straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose is characteristic with floral hints of hawthorn; it is harmonious, pleasant and delicate on the palate with grassy notes. It can also be produced as dry semi-sparkling, semi-sweet and semi-sweet semi-sparkling wine. Romagna PDO Sangiovese is ruby red, at times with purple reflections; the nose is vinous with a delicate aroma of sweet violet; it is harmonious and slightly tannic on the palate, with a pleasantly bitter aftertaste. It can display Riserva, Superiore, Superiore Riserva on the label. Romagna PDO Sangiovese Passito is ruby red, at times with purple reflections; the nose is intense and balanced with fruity hints; it is harmonious and slightly tannic on the palate, with a bitter aftertaste. Romagna PDO Sangiovese Novello is ruby red; the nose is vinous and intensely fruity; it is harmonious and sapid on the palate, dry or medium sweet. Romagna PDO Sangiovese wines cannot be released for consumption before December 1st of the year in which the grapes are harvested; Superiore wines not before April 1st of the year following that of the grape harvest. Romagna PDO Sangiovese (incl. Superiore) qualifies as Riserva if it has been aged for a minimum period of 24 months, commencing December 1st of the year in which the grapes are harvested; the wine’s physical-chemical and organoleptic eligibility cannot be evaluated until at least 22 months into the ageing process. Romagna PDO Trebbiano is straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose is vinous and pleasant; it is sapid, fresh and harmonious on the palate. It can also be produced as Spumante and semi-sparkling wine.
