The production area of Nebbiolo d’Alba PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Cuneo, in the Piedmont region.
Description of product typologies
Nebbiolo d’Alba PDO Rosso is ruby red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; the nose offers a blend of fruity hints of raspberry, geranium, wild strawberry and ethereal, spicy fragrances of cinnamon, vanilla and cocoa powder; it is dry, sapid and structured on the palate, with significant tannins and a fruity finish. It can also display Superiore on the label. Nebbiolo d’Alba PDO Spumante Rosso is ruby red, at times tending towards garnet red, varying in intensity, and has fine, persistent foam; the nose is complex, fruity and dense, with hints of yeast and bread crust; it is dry, semi-sweet and well-structured on the palate. Nebbiolo d’Alba PDO Spumante Rosé is pink, varying in intensity, and has a fine, persistent perlage; the nose offers sensations of a wide range of red summer fruit, enriched by sharp, complex notes; the traces of strawberry and red apple on the palate are in harmony with the alcoholic structure. Both the Martinotti and Classico methods can be used to produce Nebbiolo d’Alba Spumante and Nebbiolo d’Alba Spumante Rosé PDO wines. The mandatory ageing period for Nebbiolo d’Alba PDO wines is 12 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested, and 18 months for Nebbiolo d’Alba PDO Superiore wines, of which at least 6 months must be in wood; Nebbiolo d’Alba PDO wine can be released for consumption from November 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were harvested, and Superiore wines from May 1st of the second year following that in which the grapes were harvested. Nebbiolo d’Alba PDO Spumante and Nebbiolo d’Alba PDO Spumante Rosé wines must be aged for six months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested. They cannot be released for consumption before May 1st of the year following that of the grape harvest.
