Production Area
The production area of Morellino di Scansano PDO is within the hilly territory of the Province of Grosseto, which incorporates the entire territory of the municipality of Scansano and parts of Manciano, Magliano in Toscana, Grosseto, Campagnatico, Semproniano and Roccalbegna, in the Tuscany region.
Description of product typologies
Morellino di Scansano PDO is ruby red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; the nose is rich with ethereal notes, with a subtle spiciness that blends with hints of marasca cherry and ripe blackberry; it is mineral on the palate, with evident acidity and sweet, dense tannins. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has been aged for a minimum period of 2 years, of which at least one year must be in wooden barrels; the ageing period commences January 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced. Morellino di Scansano PDO wine cannot be released for consumption before March 1st of the year following that of the grape harvest.

The Morellino di Scansano PDO designation can be followed by the specification Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym. It is mandatory for the label of Morellino di Scansano Protected Designation of Origin wines to display the registered mark of the Consortium for the Protection of Morellino di Scansano. This mark is always displayed on the State Seal of the wine bottle according to current regulations.
