The Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Vin Santo and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice and Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO is within the entire territory of the municipalities of Massa Marittima and Monterotondo Marittimo, and parts of Roccastrada, Gavorrano, Castiglione della Pescaia, Scarlino and Follonica in the Province of Grosseto, in the Tuscany region.
Description of product typologies
Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO Bianco is soft straw-yellow; the nose offers fragrances of white flowers and fresh and tropical fruit; it is sapid and fresh on the palate, with excellent balance between the freshness and flavours. Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO Rosso is generally intense ruby red; the nose offers fragrances mixed berries and spices; it is generous and well-structured on the palate, with significant tannins. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has been aged for a mandatory period of at least 2 years, of which a minimum of 6 months must be in wooden barrels and 3 months maturing in the bottle; the ageing period commences January 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced. Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO Rosato is intense pink; the nose bursts with an intense and vinous fragrance, rich with hints of strawberry, roses and wild violets; it is rounded and fresh on the palate, with a good balance between the fruity and alcoholic elements. Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO Vin Santo is an intense colour ranging from golden straw-yellow to amber-yellow; the nose is ethereal, embracing and harmonious, with wafts of honey, cherry blossom and elderberry; it is harmonious and velvety on the palate, with pronounced roundness. It can display Riserva on the label. Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice varies from intense pink to pale pink; the nose offers evident fragrances of ripe fruit and marmalade; it fresh and substantial on the palate, with a long sweet and harmonious finish. It can display Riserva on the label. Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO Novello is ruby red; the nose is vinous and fruity, with strong aromas of raspberry and small red fruit; it is dry, slightly acidulous and sapid on the palate. Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO Vin Santo and Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice wines (including Riserva) must be produced with traditional vinification methods which involve carefully selected grapes being dried naturally in suitable environments, with the possibility of partial drying with the aid of ventilated air; storage and ageing must take place in wooden kegs with a capacity of no more than 500 litres. Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO Vin Santo wine cannot be released for consumption before March 1st of the third year following that in which the grapes were produced; Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice can be released for consumption from November 1st of the third year following that in which the grapes were produced. Riserva wines can be released for consumption from November 1st of the fourth year following that in which the grapes were produced.

Grape variety specifications
The Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 90% Vermentino, Viognier, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%, excluding the Moscato Bianco grape variety. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Sangiovese (incl. Riserva, Rosé, Novello), Syrah, with the possible addition of other red grapes, max. 15%, excluding the Aleatico grape variety. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin. Monteregio di Massa Marittima PDO Sangiovese wines qualify as Riserva if they have been aged for a mandatory period of at least 2 years, of which a minimum of 6 months must be in wooden barrels and 3 months maturing in the bottle; the ageing period commences January 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced.
