The Montefalco PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red (incl. Riserva) and Grechetto (grape variety specification).
Production Area
The production area of Montefalco PDO is within the territory of the municipality of Montefalco and parts of the municipalities of Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Castel Ritaldi and Giano dell’Umbria in the Province of Perugia, in the Umbria region.
Description of product typologies
Montefalco PDO Bianco is straw-yellow, varying in intensity, at times with greenish reflections; the nose is delicate and vinous, with floral notes and hints of yellow fleshy fruit and citrus and tropical fruit, varying in intensity; it is fresh or slightly acidulous on the palate, sapid, persistent, fruity and harmonious, with a pleasantly bitter aftertaste. Montefalco PDO Rosso is ruby red; the nose reveals typical hints of cherry and mixed berries, raspberry and blueberry; it is dry and harmonious on the palate, with good body. Montefalco PDO Rosso Riserva is ruby red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; the nose is intense and fruity, at times with spicy and balsamic notes; it is dry and persistent on the palate, with a good, harmonious structure and persistence. Montefalco PDO Rosso wine can be released for consumption from May 1st of the second year following that of the harvest, after a mandatory ageing period of at least 18 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Montefalco PDO Rosso Riserva can be released for consumption from May 1st of the third year following that of the harvest, after a mandatory ageing period of at least 30 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced, of which at least 12 must be in wooden barrels.

Grape variety specifications
Montefalco PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Grechetto- Grechetto, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Umbria region, max. 15%. Montefalco PDO Grechetto is either straw-yellow, varying in depth, or more golden yellow, at times with greenish reflections; the nose is delicate and light, revealing fruity hints of apple and pear, at times pineapple or citrus fruit, and floral hints of hawthorn and sometimes broom or chamomile; it is harmonious, fresh and pleasantly bitter on the palate, with good structure, offering fruity notes of apple and pear and at times pineapple or citrus fruit.
