Production Area
The production area of Montecastelli PGI is within the territory of the municipalities of Castelnuovo Val di Cecina, Volterra and Pomarance in the Province of Pisa, in the Tuscany region.
Description of product typologies
Montecastelli PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow in colour, varying in intensity; the nose offers varying degrees of fruity fragrances depending on the grape variety used; it is dry, sapid and fresh on the palate, with a slightly fruity flavour and good persistence. Montecastelli PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby-red in colour, varying in intensity; the nose is intense, with characteristic fragrances of red fruit, traces of spices and aromatic herbs and an aromatic complexity deriving from the grape varieties used; it is dry and sapid on the palate with good body. It can also be produced as Novello wine.
Grape variety specifications
From white grape varieties: min. 85% Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia Bianca Lunga, Vermentino, pure or with the addition of grapessimilar in colour originating from grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85%, Sangiovese, Merlot, Canaiolo Nero, Ciliegiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, pure or with the addition of grapessimilar in colour originating from grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max 15%.
