The production area of Molise PDO or del Molise PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the provinces of Campobasso and Isernia, in the Molise region.
Description of product typologies
Molise PDO or del Molise PDO Rosso is intense ruby-red in colour, tending towards garnet with ageing; the nose offers fragrances of marasca cherry, black pepper and tobacco; the palate displays tannins, an acid note and a spicy finish. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has been aged for a mandatory period of 2 years, of which at least 6 months must be in wooden barrels, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced.Molise PDO or del Molise PDO Rosé is cherry-red or delicate rose-red in colour; the nose is vinous with hints of small red fruit, violet and rose; it is dry and smooth on the palate, with delicate sensations of the aromas offered on the nose. Molise PDO or del Molise PDO Spumante Bianco is varying degrees of straw-yellow in colour, with possible green or golden reflectionsand lively and persistent foam; the nose is intense and rich with minerals and aromas of green apple and wild flowers; it is brut-nature, extra-brut or brut on the palate, delicate and harmonious, finishing with notes of yeast and wood-oven baked bread. Molise PDO or del Molise PDO Spumante Rosso is varying degrees of ruby-red in colour; the nose is intense, pleasing and fruity with a wide range of aromas displaying strong fruity notes of cherry and fresh sour cherry; it is harmonious and delicate on the palate, brut-nature, extra-brut or brut. Molise PDO or del Molise PDO Spumante Rosé is varying degrees of pink in colour, with intense and persistent foam; the nose bursts with lively and pleasing fragrances, with delicate fruity hints and a long flowery finish; it is brut-nature, extra-brut or brut on the palate, delicate and harmonious with aromas ranging from vanilla to hawthorn. Molise PDO or del Molise PDO Novello is ruby-red in colour, varying in intensity; it is pleasing on the nose, revealing notes of fruits of the forest and just-ripe blackberries; it is smooth, velvety and harmonious on the palate with an embracing flavour of small red fruit. Molise PDO or del Molise PDO Passito with specification of grape variety has the organoleptic properties that are typical of the grapes and terroir of origin.

The Molise PDO or del Molise PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Moscato Bianco (incl. Semi-Sparkling, Spumante, Passito), Pinot Grigio (incl. Semi-Sparkling, Spumante), Fiano (incl. Semi-Sparkling, Spumante), Malvasia (incl. Semi-Sparkling, Spumante), Chardonnay (incl. Semi-Sparkling, Spumante), Falanghina (incl. Spumante, Passito), Greco Bianco, Pinot Bianco (incl. Semi-Sparkling, Spumante), Sauvignon, Trebbiano, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From Red grape varieties: min. 85% Aglianico (incl. Riserva), Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot (incl. Semi-Sparkling, Novello), Tintilia (incl. Riserva, Bovale Grande), Pinot Nero, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
