The Matera PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Spumante, Spumante Rosé and White Passito. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.

The production area of Matera PDO is within the entire territory of the Province of Matera, in the Basilicata region.
Description of product typologies
Matera PDO Bianco is straw-yellow in colour; the range of fragrances on the nose move between delicate flowers fruity and aromatic notes, leading to a vegetal finish; the palate displays a smooth structure with suggestions of fresh spring fruit. Matera PDO Rosso has an intense ruby-red colour; the nose offers a slightly spicy aroma which blends harmoniously with hints of red fruit; it is warm and embracing on the palate, with evident tannins and a long aromatic persistence. Matera PDO Rosso wine can be released for consumption after it has undergone a mandatory maturing period of 12 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Matera PDO Rosé is pink to cherry-red in colour; the nose is intense, with characteristic floral notes; it is characteristic and fresh on the palate, at the same time wrapped in strong aromas of small red fruit. Matera PDO Spumante is straw-yellow in colour with a fine and persistent perlage; the nose displays fruity sensations of pear and yellow apple; it is fresh on the palate, with a fruity and aromatic flavour. Matera PDO Spumante Rosé is cherry-pink in colour with smooth and persistent foam; the nose offers fruity notes and hints of vanilla; it is pleasing, well-balanced and complex on the palate. The gasification of Matera PDO Spumante and Matera PDO Spumante Rosé wines must be obtained through fermentation in bottles, according to traditional methods. Matera PDO Passito Bianco ranges from deep yellow to amber in colour, depending on ageing; the nose offers intense fruity fragrances with evident hints of melon and apricot; the fruity notes on the palate create a sapid flavour ranging from dry to sweet.
Grape variety specifications
The Matera PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Greco Bianco, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 90% Primitivo (including Passito), pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%; Moro (incl. Riserva): min 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, min. 20% Primitivo, min. 10% Merlot, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin. Matera PDO Primitivo and Matera PDO Moro wines can only be released for consumption after they have undergone a mandatory ageing period of at least 12 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced; for Riserva wines there is a mandatory maturing period of 36 months, of which at least 24 months must be in barrels, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced.
