Description
The Marino PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Spumante, Passito and Late Harvest. The Designation also incorporates numerous geographical specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Marino PDO is within the entire territory of the municipalities of Marino and Ciampino and parts of Rome and Castelgandolfo, in the Province of Rome, in the Lazio region.
Description of product typologies
Marino PDO Bianco is straw-yellow; the nose reveals fragrances of flowers and exotic fruit; it is fresh and sapid on the palate. It can also be produced as the following types of wine: Dry, Medium-Sweet, Semi-Sweet or Sweet and Semi-Sparkling (the latter also as Medium-Sweet or Semi-Sweet). It can also display the following on the label: Superiore (including Dry, Medium-Sweet, Semi-Sweet or Sweet wines), Classico (including Dry, Medium-Sweet, Semi-Sweet or Sweet wines) and Classico Superiore (including Dry, Medium-Sweet, Semi-Sweet or Sweet wines). Marino PDO Spumante (Dry or Semi-Sweet) in intense straw-yellow and has lively, fine and persistent foam; the nose is delicate with traces of flowers and dried fruit; it is sapid on the palate. Marino PDO Passito is amber with golden reflections; it is vinous on the nose, with warm sensations of honey and almond; it is sweet and velvety on the palate. It can also be a semi-sweet or sweet wine and display Classico on the label (including semi-sweet or sweet wines). Marino PDO Vendemmia Tardiva (Semi-Sweet or Sweet) is different shades of golden yellow; the nose displays harmonious hints of fruit; it is sweet on the palate, with aromas of fruit and honey. It can display Classico on the label (including semi-sweet or sweet wines). Grapes destined for the production of Marino PDO Passito and Passito Classico wines must have been dried naturally between December 1st of the harvest year and no later than March 31st of the following year. The grapes can be dried on the vines, in the sun, or under cover in suitable environments; partial dehydration with ventilated air is permitted. The ageing period must last for at least 8 months, commencing March 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced, of which at least 6 months must be in barrels. The wine cannot be released for consumption before the following November 1st. Grapes destined for the production of Marino PDO Vendemmia Tardiva or Classico Vendemmia Tardiva wines must be dried naturally on the vines and harvested at the beginning of November.

The Marino PDO can also be accompanied by additional geographical specifications referring to municipalities, districts, farms and localities within the production area and from where the grapes used to produce the wine effectively originate.
Grape variety specifications
The Marino PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Malvasia del Lazio, Trebbiano Verde (Verdicchio Bianco), Bellone, Greco, Bombino, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.

The Marino PDO can be followed by the specification Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym.
