The Maremma Toscana PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, White Spumante, Rosé Spumante, White Passito, Red Passito, Late Harvest, Vin Santo and Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Maremma Toscana PDO is within the entire territory of the Province of Grosseto, in the Tuscany region.
Description of product typologies
Maremma Toscana PDO Bianco is straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose is light and delicate; it is harmonious on the palate, ranging from dry to medium-sweet. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone a minimum ageing period of 12 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Maremma Toscana PDO Rosso is ruby red with purplish reflections; the nose is rich with aromas of Mediterranean scrub, ripe fruit and spices; it is harmonious and balanced on the palate, ranging from dry to medium-sweet, and it is also lively and rounded when the “governo all’uso toscano” vinification technique is used. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone a minimum ageing period of 24 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced, of which at least 6 months must be spent in wooden recipients. Maremma Toscana PDO Rosato is pink, varying in intensity; it is delicate on the nose, with intense fruity notes; it is harmonious and slightly acidulous on the palate, ranging from dry to medium-sweet. Maremma Toscana PDO Rosato wines must be obtained through the rosé vinification of black grapes. Maremma Toscana PDO Spumante Biano is straw-yellow, varying in intensity, and has a fine, persistent perlage; the nose is light, fruity and persistent, and reveals an intensity and complexity that is influenced by the production method used (more fruity and floral notes with the “Martinotti” method, and a more complex bouquet with hints of bread crust and yeast with the Classico method); it is fresh and slightly acidulous on the palate, with varying degrees of roundness in the wines ranging from “dosaggio zero” (no added sugar) to extra dry. Maremma Toscana PDO Spumante Rosé ranges from soft pink to cherry pink; the nose is delicate and light with evident fruity notes; the flavour is lively and acidulous, with a slightly bitter background in the wines ranging from “dosaggio zero” (no added sugar) to extra dry. Maremma Toscana Spumante Protected Designation of Origin wines belonging to the quality sparkling wine category can be made sparkling with both the “Martinotti” and “Classico” methods. Maremma Toscana PDO Passito Bianco ranges from golden yellow to amber-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose is rich with evolving fragrances of pastries, honey, dried fruit and ripe fruit; it is rounded and velvety on the palate, ranging from dry to sweet. Maremma Toscana PDO Passito Rosso is intense ruby red; the nose offers intense fragrances of ripe fruit with notes reminiscent of chocolate; it is velvety, warm and full-bodied on the palate, ranging from dry to sweet. Maremma Toscana PDO Vendemmia Tardiva ranges from intense straw-yellow to golden yellow, varying in depth; it is delicate and intense on the nose, with notes of ripe fruit and at times spicy; it is full and harmonious on the palate, ranging from dry to sweet. Maremma Toscana PDO Vin Santo varies from straw-yellow to amber or dark brown; the nose is rich and complex, ethereal, warm and intense, with evident notes of ripe fruit, raisins and candied grape; the palate offers velvety sensations, ranging from dry to sweet, with a remarkably long, persistent finish and more pronounced roundness in the semi-sweet wines. Maremma Toscana PDO Novello is ruby red; the nose offers intense fragrances of red fruit and pansy; it is dry, slightly acidulous and sapid on the palate. Maremma Toscana PDO Bianco Riserva wines cannot be released for consumption before November 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were harvested. Maremma Toscana PDO Rosso Riserva wines cannot be released for consumption before November 1st of the second year following that in which the grapes were harvested. For the production of Maremma Toscana PDO Rosso wines, the "governo all'uso toscano" technique is allowed, which consists of the secondary fermentation of the wine by adding slightly dried red grapes, which must be no less than 10 kg per hectolitre. Maremma Toscana PDO Passito wines, including those with specification of grape variety, must be obtained with grapes that have been dried naturally outdoors or in suitable environments; partial dehydration with ventilated air is permitted. The wines cannot be released for consumption before September 30th of the year following that in which the grapes were produced, after a mandatory period of no less than 6 months maturing in wooden recipients and/or the bottle. Maremma Toscana PDO Vendemmia Tardiva wines, including those with specification of grape variety, must be obtained with grapes that have been dried either partially or entirely on the vines. Grape variety specifications
The Maremma Toscana PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Ansonica (incl. Spumante), Chardonnay, Trebbiano, Sauvignon, Vermentino (incl. Spumante), Viognier, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Tuscany region, excluding Moscato Bianco, max. 15%; min. 95% Vermentino (Superiore), pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Tuscany region, excluding Moscato Bianco, max. 5%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Alicante or Grenache (incl. Rosé), Cabernet (Sauvignon and/or Franc and/or Carmenère), Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Pugnitello, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo (incl. Rosé), Merlot (incl. Rosé), Sangiovese (incl. Rosé), Syrah (incl. Rosé), pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Tuscany region, max. 15%. For the production of Maremma Toscana PDO Sangiovese wines, the "governo all'uso toscano" technique is allowed, which consists of the slow secondary fermentation of the wine by adding slightly dried red grapes. Passito with specification of grape variety: min. 85% Ansonica, Vermentino, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Ciliegiolo, Cabernet (from Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Carmenère), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese, pure or with the addition of grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Tuscany region, max. 15%. Late Harvest with specification of grape variety: min. 85% Ansonica, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Trebbiano, Vermentino and Viognier, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Tuscany region, max. 15%.
