Description
The Lizzano PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Spumante, Rosé Spumante, Red Novello and Rosé Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Lizzano PDO is within the territory of a few areas in the municipality of Taranto and the municipalities of Lizzano and Faggiano in the Province of Taranto, in the Apulia region.
Description of product typologies
Lizzano PDO Bianco is straw-yellow; the nose displays intense fragrances of flowers and white fleshy fruit on a background of notes of aromatic herbs; it is intense and sapid on the palate, with a fruity finish. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Lizzano PDO Rosso is deep ruby red; the nose displays evident hints of woods and ripe fruit, with minerally and vegetal notes; it is structured on the palate, with a good balance between acidity, smoothness and a tannic backbone. It can also be a semi-sparkling or Novello wine. Lizzano PDO Rosato is light ruby red; the nose bursts with vinous hints and fruity fragrances if the wine is young; it is dry and harmonious on the palate, with notes of red apple highlighting the freshness of the flavour. It can also be a semi-sparkling or Novello wine. Lizzano PDO Spumante Bianco is soft straw-yellow, with lively, even and persistent foam; the nose is delicate and pleasant, with evident hints of fresh fruit; it is balanced, fresh and pleasant on the palate. Lizzano PDO Spumante Rosé is soft pink and has lively, fine foam and an even, persistent perlage; the aromas are pleasant and balanced, with delicate vinous notes; the harmony of the nose returns on the palate, with a dry, fresh flavour blending with a balanced finish. Lizzano PDO Novello Rosso and Novello Rosato are obtained respectively from Red and Rosé wines obtained through the carbonic maceration of the grapes. The wines cannot be released for consumption before November 6th of the year in which the grapes were produced.
Grape variety specifications
The Lizzano PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From red grape varieties (incl. Superiore): min. 85% Malvasia Nera di Brindisi and/or Malvasia Nera di Lecce, with the possible addition of Negroamaro and/or Montepulciano and/or Sangiovese and/or Pinot Nero, max. 15%; min. 85% Negroamaro (incl. Rosé), with the possible addition of Malvasia Nera di Brindisi and/or Malvasia Nera di Lecce and/or Montepulciano and/or Sangiovese and/or Pinot Nero, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin. Lizzano PDO Negroamaro and Lizzano PDO Malvasia Nera wines can display Superiore on the label if they are obtained from grapes with a minimum natural alcohol level of 12.5% vol., and were released for consumption with a minimum alcohol level of 13% vol., no earlier than November 30th of the year following that in which the grapes were produced.
