The production area of Liguria di Levante PGI is within the entire territory of the Province of La Spezia, in the Liguria region.
Description of product typologies
Liguria di Levante PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is vivid straw-yellow, varying in intensity; it is delicate, pleasant, persistent and slightly fruity on the nose, complex; it is dry and fresh on the palate, with a slightly fruity flavour and good persistence. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Liguria di Levante PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby red, varying in intensity and tending towards garnet red with ageing; the nose is delicate, with characteristic fragrances of red fruit, traces of spices and aromatic herbs, and aromatic complexity deriving from the grape varieties used; it is dry, sapid and tannic on the palate, with good body. It can also be a semi-sparkling or Novello wine. Liguria di Levante PGI Rosato, alone or with specification of grape variety, ranges from soft pink to claret pink; it displays delicate fruity fragrances on the nose; it is dry, harmonious and fresh on the palate, with the characteristics of the grape varieties of origin. Liguria di Levante PGI Passito Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, ranges from intense, vivid golden yellow to amber; the nose is decisive, characteristic and delicately honeyish, with intense fruity notes; the attack on the palate is sweet to medium-sweet, and it is harmonious and characteristic with good body and a pleasant persistence. Liguria di Levante PGI Passito Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is an intense, vivid and bright ruby red colour; the nose is decisive and vinous, offering intense fruity notes; it ranges from sweet to medium-sweet on the palate, and is harmonious, characteristic and pleasant, with good body and persistence.
Grape variety specifications
The Liguria di Levante PGI with specification of one of the varieties suitable for cultivation in the Liguria region, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding varieties. A maximum of 15% of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. The Liguria di Levante PGI may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Malvasia Bianca Lunga, Trebbiano Toscano, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Merlot, Pollera nera, Sangiovese, Sirah, Vermentino Nero, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. Liguria di Levante PGI Rosé must be obtained through the “rosé” vinification of red grapes or through the vinification of red and white grapes that can have been mashed separately. Novello wines can also be obtained from at least 35% of grapes that have undergone carbonic maceration. Passito wines must be produced with grapes dried on trellises or similar, in suitable environments, including hydro-thermally conditioned environments with forced ventilation, until they reach a minimum total alcohol level of 15% vol. Liguria di Levante PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
