The production area of Lago di Caldaro PDO or Caldaro PDO (Kalterersee PDO or Kalterer PDO) is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the autonomous provinces of Bolzano and Trento.
Description of product typologies
Lago di Caldaro PDO or Caldaro PDO (Kalterersee PDO or Kalterer PDO is German) is light to medium ruby red; the nose displays characteristic fragrances of flowers, pansy and rose, and small red fruit, with notes of balsamic and brushwood; it is smooth, harmonious and pleasant on the palate, with a slightly almondy finish. It can display Classico, Classico Superiore, Scelto (Kalterersee Auslese in German), Scelto Classico and Scelto Classico Superiore on the label. Lago di Caldaro PDO or Caldaro PDO (Kalterersee PDO or Kalterer PDO) wines which have the right to qualify as Classico must be obtained from grapes produced in the municipalities of Caldaro, Appiano, Termeno, Cortaccia, Vadena, Egna, Montagna, Ora and Bronzolo. If the wines which have the right to qualify as Classico are obtained from grapes with a minimum natural alcohol level of 10.5% vol. and have undergone a suitable period of maturation, they may display Classico Superiore on the label. Lago di Caldaro PDO or Caldaro PDO (Kalterersee PDO or Kalterer PDO) wines obtained from selected grapes with a minimum natural alcohol level of 11% vol. and released for consumption with a minimum natural alcohol level of 11.5% vol. can display Scelto (Auslese in German) on the label.
Geographical and sub-area specifications
The Lago di Caldaro PDO or Caldaro PDO (Kalterersee PDO or Kalterer PDO) Classico or Classico Superiore wines may also display the additional specification “Alto Adige” (Südtirol in German) on the label.
