Description
The Grance Senesi PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Passito and Late Harvest. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Grance Senesi PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Rapolano Terme, Murlo, Asciano, Monteroni D’Arbia and parts of the municipality of Sovicille, in the Province of Siena, in the Tuscany region.
Description of product typologies
Grance Senesi PDO Bianco is straw-yellow; the nose is delicate and fruity with faint notes of ripe fruit; it is fresh and lively on the palate, with good acidity and evident minerality. Grance Senesi PDO Rosso is ruby red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; it is pleasant and vinous on the nose with hints of red fruit; it is dry, harmonious and extremely complex on the palate. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine originates from vines that are at least 5 years old. Grance Senesi PDO Rosso wines can be released for consumption from March of the year following that in which the grapes were produced; for Riserva wines it is from January of the third year following grape harvest, on the condition that it has been kept in wooden recipients for at least one year. Grance Senesi PDO Passito is golden yellow; it is dense and harmonious on the nose with evident notes of honey and dried fruit; it is warm, smooth and elegantly sweet on the palate. Grance Senesi PDO Passito wine must be obtained from grapes that have been dried in suitable environments (including those with hydro-thermal conditioning and/or forced air), until they have obtained a sugar content of at least 300 g/l. The wine can be released for consumption from January of the third year following that of the grape harvest, on the condition that it has been kept in wooden recipients at least 12 months. Grance Senesi PDO Vendemmia Tardiva is golden-yellow; the nose displays delicate fresh and persistent floral fragrances; it is sweet, warm, smooth and elegant on the palate. Grance Senesi PDO Vendemmia Tardiva wine must be obtained from grapes dried on the vines so that at the moment of harvesting they have reached a minimum natural alcohol level of 15% vol.; the grapes cannot be harvested any later than October 1st. It can be released for consumption from April of the year following that in which the grapes were produced.
Grape variety specifications
Grance Senesi PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Malvasia Bianca Lunga, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. Grance Senesi PDO Malvasia Bianca Lunga wine can only be released for consumption after March 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Canaiolo, Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. Grance Senesi PDO Canaiolo, Grance Senesi PDO Sangiovese, Grance Senesi PDO Merlot and Grance Senesi PDO Cabernet Sauvignon wines can only be released for consumption after January 1st of the second year following that in which the grapes were produced. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
