The Friuli or Friuli Venezia Giulia PDO (Furlanija PDO or Furlanija Julijska Krajina PDO in Slovenian) is reserved for the following types of white wine: White, Red, Spumante, Spumante Classic Method; Ribolla gialla Spumante and Ribolla gialla Spumante classic method (grape variety specification). The Designation also includes numerous other grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Friuli or Friuli Venezia Giulia PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the provinces of Pordenone, Gorizia, Trieste and Udine, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
Description of product typologies
Friuli or Friuli Venezia Giulia PDO Bianco is straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose is pleasant and elegant; it is dry and harmonious on the palate. Friuli or Friuli Venezia Giulia PDO Spumante is straw-yellow, varying in intensity, with light, persistent foam; the nose is elegant and characteristic; it is sapid and harmonious on the palate, dry in the Extra Brut version and slightly semi-sweet in the Brut and Extra Dry versions. Friuli or Friuli Venezia Giulia PDO Spumante Classic Method ranges from straw-yellow to golden yellow; the nose is elegant, at times with hints of yeast; it is sapid and harmonious on the palate, very dry in the Pas Dosè version, dry in the Extra Brut version and slightly semi-sweet in the Brut and Extra Dry versions. Friuli or Friuli Venezia Giulia PDO Rosso is ruby red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; the nose is intense and elegant, with hints of red fruit; it is dry and harmonious on the palate.

Friuli or Friuli Venezia Giulia PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: Ribolla Gialla (only Spumante and Spumante Metodo Classico), min. 85% Ribolla Gialla, pure or with the addition of grapes originating from the Pinot Bianco and/or Pinot Grigio and/or Chardonnay and/or Pinot Nero (white vinified) grape varieties, max. 15%. Min. 85% Chardonnay, Friulano, Malvasia, Pinot Bianco or Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon, Traminer Aromatico, Verduzzo Friulano, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Nero or Pinot Noir, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. Friuli or Friuli Venezia Giulia PDO Ribolla Gialla Spumante is straw-yellow, varying in intensity, with light, persistent foam; it has an elegant and characteristic bouquet; it is lively on the palate, harmonious in the Brut, Extra Brut or Extra Dry versions. Friuli or Friuli Venezia Giulia PDO Ribolla Gialla Spumante Metodo Classico ranges from straw-yellow to golden yellow, with light, intense foam; the nose is elegant and ample; it is sapid and harmonious on the palate, very dry in the Pas Dosè version, dry in the Extra Brut version and slightly semi-sweet in the Brut or Extra Dry versions.
