Production Area
The production area of Friuli Aquileia PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Udine, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
Description of product typologies
Friuli Aquileia PDO Bianco is straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose displays a pleasant and light fragrance with fruity undertones; it is harmonious, velvety and fresh on the palate. Friuli Aquileia PDO Rosso is ruby red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; it is vinous and intense on the nose with spicy undertones; it is dry, smooth and full-bodied on the palate. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone an ageing period of at least 2 years in recipients made of wood or other materials, commencing November 11th of the year in which the grapes were produced. Friuli Aquileia PDO Rosé is pink to pale cherry-pink; it is vinous, intense and pleasant on the nose; the palate is dry, harmonious and full. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Friuli Aquileia PDO Novello is a characteristic ruby red colour; the nose is vinous with fruity hints; it is characteristic and extremely sapid on the palate. Friuli Aquileia PDO Spumante with specification of the grape variety has the organoleptic properties typical of the grapes and terroir of origin.
Grape variety specifications
The Friuli Aquileia PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties (incl. Superiore): Chardonnay (incl. Spumante, Semi-Sparkling), Friulano, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Riesling Renano, Sauvignon, Traminer Aromatico, Verduzzo Friulano, Malvasia Istriana (incl. Semi-Sparkling), Müller Thurgau (incl. Semi-Sparkling). From red grape varieties (including Riserva, Superiore): Merlot, Cabernet (Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon), Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso; a maximum of 10% of grapes originating from the Refosco Nostrano grape variety may be used to produce Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso wine. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
