Production Area
The production area of Falerno del Massico PDO is within the municipalities of Sessa Aurunca, Cellole, Mondragone, Falciano del Massico and Carinola in the Province of Caserta, in the Campania region.
Description of product typologies
Falerno del Massico PDO Bianco is straw-yellow with greenish reflections; the nose is displays hints of ripe fruit, especially pineapple and peach, flowers such as broom and rose, and aromatic herbs, particularly sage and vanilla; it is rich, persistent and velvety on the palate. Falerno del Massico PDO Rosso is intense ruby red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; the nose is rich and complex with dense notes of pansy, black fruit like cherry and blackberry, followed by spices, nutmeg and cocoa; the palate has an elegant body and rich, yet not aggressive tannins. It may display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone a minimum ageing period of two years, of which at least one year must be in wooden barrels. Before being released for consumption, Falerno del Massico PDO Rosso (including those with specification of grape variety) must undergo a minimum ageing period of 12 months, commencing January 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced.

The Falerno del Massico PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Primitivo (incl. Riserva and Vecchio), pure or with the addition of Aglianico and/or Piedirosso and/or Barbera, max. 15%. Falerno del Massico PDO Primitivo is intense ruby red, tending to garnet red with ageing; the aroma is rich, intense and persistent; it is dry or mouth-filling on the palate, warm, robust and harmonious. Falerno del Massico PDO Primitivo Riserva is intense ruby red, tending to garnet red with ageing; the aroma is characteristic, intense and persistent; it is dry, warm, robust and harmonious on the palate.
