Description
The Erice PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Spumante and Passito; Late Harvest (only with specification of grape variety). The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Erice PDO is within the territory of the municipality of Buseto Palizzolo and parts of the municipalities of Erice, Valderice, Castellammare del Golfo, Custonaci, Paceco and Trapani, in the Province of Trapani, in the Sicily region.
Description of product typologies
Erice PDO Bianco is luminous straw-yellow; the nose offers fresh fruity sensations of yellow peach, lemon zest and salty hints; it is mineral and intense on the palate, with persistent fruity undertones. Erice PDO Rosso is intense ruby red; the nose offers a lively alternation between berries and an intense floral aroma, supported by good minerality; it is deep, intense and slightly tannic on the palate, with a fruity finish. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone an ageing period of at least 2 years, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Erice PDO Spumante is straw-yellow with fine and persistent foam; the nose is aromatic and characteristic in the Sweet wine, while Brut wines display a delicate hint of yeast; the aromatic aromas of the nose return on the palate, and it is harmonious with good persistence. Erice PDO Spumante must be obtained exclusively from secondary fermentation in autoclaves. Erice PDO Passito is golden yellow; the nose is embracing, with aromas of orange blossom and fruit compote, with undertones of aromatic herbs; it is warm and embracing on the palate, with traces of dried fruit, hints of minerals and long persistence. Passito wines must be obtained from grapes which are also dried in drying houses.
Grape variety specifications
The Erice PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Ansonica or Insolia, Catarratto, Grecanico or Grecanico Dorato, Grillo, Chardonnay, Müller Thurgau, Sauvignon, Zibibbo, Moscato di Alessandria, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%; Moscato: min. 95% Moscato di Alessandria, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 5%; min. 95% Moscato di Alessandria or Zibibbo (Late Harvest), Sauvignon (Late Harvest), pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 5%. From red grape varieties (incl. Riserva): min. 85% Calabrese or Nero d’Avola, Frappato, Perricone or Pignatello, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
