Description
The Eloro PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: Red and Rosé. The Designation also incorporates two grape variety specifications and one geographical specification.
Production Area
The production area of Eloro PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Noto, Pachino, Portopalo di Capo Passero and Rosolini in the Province of Siracusa, and the municipality of Ispica in the Province of Ragusa, in the Sicily region.
Description of product typologies
Eloro PDO Rosso is intense ruby red, at times with garnet or brick red reflections due to ageing; the nose is generous and intense, offering sensations of moss, marasca cherry and cherry; it is full, full-bodied and tannic on the palate, leaving a velvety and robust aftertaste. Eloro PDO Rosato is greyish-pink (a colour known as “occhio di pernice” in Italian), varying in intensity and with garnet red reflections; the nose is delicate with fruity aromas; the fruitiness of the nose returns on the palate, which is characteristic, velvety and slightly acidulous.
Geographical and sub-area specifications
Eloro PDO Pachino geographical sub-designation, which is reserved exclusively for Red wine obtained from a minimum of 80% Nero d’Avola and a maximum of 20% Frappato and/or Pignatello. The Eloro PDO with specification of the sub-area Pachino cannot be released for consumption before April 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced; it qualifies as a Riserva wine if it has undergone a minimum ageing period of two years, commencing October 15th of the harvest year, at least six months of which must be in wooden barrels.
Grape variety specifications
The Eloro PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From red grape varieties: min. 90% Nero d’Avola, Pignatello, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
