The production area of Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore PDO or Ovada PDO is within the entire territory of the municipalities of Ovada, Belforte Monferrato, Bosio, Capriata d’Orba, Carpeneto, Casaleggio Boiro, Cassinelle, Castelletto d’Orba, Cremolino, Lerma, Molare, Montaldeo, Montaldo Bormida, Mornese, Morsasco, Parodi Ligure, Prasco, Rocca Grimalda, San Cristoforo, Silvano d’Orba, Tagliolo Monferrato, Trisobbio, in the Province of Alessandria, in the Piedmont region.
Description of product typologies
Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore PDO or Ovada PDO is ruby red to garnet red. The slightly spicy nose displays fragrances of small red fruit and blackberries and sensations of aromatic herbs; it is dry, well-structured, intense and complex on the palate, with a noticeable flavour of ripe fruit and slightly balsamic notes. It may display Riserva, Vigna and Vigna Riserva on the label. Grapes destined for the vinification of Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore PDO or Ovada PDO wines must ensure a minimum natural alcohol level of 12% vol, while the minimum natural alcohol level for Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore PDO or Ovada PDO with the specification Vigna must be 12.5%. Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore PDO or Ovada PDO wines with the specifications Superiore and Vigna must have undergone a mandatory ageing period, 12 months and 20 months respectively, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested. For Riserva wines the ageing period must be at least 24 months.
