Production Area
The production area of Costa Toscana PGI is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the provinces of Massa-Carrara, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno and Grosseto, in the Tuscany region.
Description of product typologies
Costa Toscana PGI Bianco is straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose displays intense aromas of fruit; it is delicate to intense on the palate, typical and extremely smooth. It can also be a semi-sparkling, medium-sweet or sweet wine. Costa Toscana PGI Rosso is intense red with purplish reflections; it displays fruity sensations of red berries on the nose; the palate is well-structured with elegant, smooth tannins. It can also be a medium-sweet or sweet wine. Costa Toscana PGI Rosato is pink, varying in intensity; the nose bursts with floral aromas; it is complex on the palate, typical of very old wine-producing areas. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Costa Toscana PGI Passito Bianco (from dried grapes) is deep straw-yellow to golden yellow; it displays fragrances of exotic fruit or fruit jam on the nose; it is well-balanced, full and rounded on the palate, without displaying any tart characteristics. Costa Toscana PGI Passito Rosso (from dried grapes) is deep red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; the nose is intense, with characteristic and pleasant fragrances; it is smooth, velvety and harmonious on the palate, with notes of fresh fruit. Costa Toscana PGI Vendemmia Tardiva Bianco (from overripe grapes) is deep straw-yellow to golden yellow; the nose offers fragrances of ripe fruit and honey, and is characterised by different levels of Botrytis-infection (noble rot); it is rounded, yet contained on the palate, with a balanced sweet and tart flavour. Costa Toscana PGI Vendemmia Tardiva Rosso (from overripe grapes) is ruby red with purplish reflections; the nose is harmonious with intense fruity notes; it is smooth, with elegant sweetness, and the fruity notes of the nose return on the palate. Costa Toscana PGI Novello is purplish red to ruby; the nose displays floral and fruity fragrances, differentiated by the percentage of the grape varieties; it has a young taste and is extremely drinkable.
Grape variety specifications
The Costa Toscana PGI with specification of grape varieties is reserved for wines obtained – in accordance with European and national regulations – from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Tuscany region. Costa Toscana PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
