The Colline Lucchesi PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Vin Santo and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Colline Lucchesi PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Lucca, Capannori and Porcari in the Province of Lucca, in the Tuscany region.
Description of product typologies
Colline Lucchesi PDO Bianco is intense straw-yellow with a golden glow; the nose displays fragrances of ripe white fruit; it is dry on the palate, with hints of flint. Colline Lucchesi PDO Rosso is ruby red, varying in intensity and tending towards garnet red with ageing; the nose is dominated by notes of berries, hints of leather and traces of sugared coffee; the palate releases a delicate and elegant spiciness and the slightly tannic element heightens appreciation of this wine with a pleasant blackberry aftertaste. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone an ageing period of at least 2 years and is produced with grapes that have a minimum natural alcohol level of 11.5% vol. The ageing period commences January 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Colline Lucchesi PDO Vin Santo is a beautiful, intense golden-yellow colour that can tend towards amber; the nose is pleasant, harmonious and characteristic; the flavour of the semi-sweet wine is characterised by the predominant sweetness of Passito, and it is dry, velvety and harmonious. Colline Lucchesi PDO Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice varies from pale to intense pink, with garnet red reflections; the nose is intense and characteristic; it is sweet, smooth and velvety on the palate. Colline Lucchesi PDO Vin Santo and Colline Lucchesi PDO Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice wines must be obtained from grapes that have undergone a natural drying process and which are not mashed before December 1st of the harvest year and no later than March 31st of the following years; the grapes must be dried in suitable areas and must reach a sugar content of no less than 27%. Partial dehydration with ventilated air is permitted. The wines cannot be released for consumption before December 1st of the third year following that in which the grapes were produced.
Grape variety specifications
The Colline Lucchesi PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Vermentino, Sauvignon, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties (incl. Riserva): min. 85% Sangiovese, Merlot, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%, with the exception of Aleatico and Moscato.
Additional specifications
Colline Lucchesi PDO wines may display Secco (Dry), Abboccato (Medium-Sweet), Amabile (Semi-Sweet) and Dolce (Sweet) on the label, in accordance with European product labelling regulations.
