Description
The Colli Perugini PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Spumante, Vino Santo or Vin Santo and Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Colli Perugini PDO is within parts of the territory of the municipalities of Perugia, Deruta, Marsciano, Fratta Todina, Monte Castello di Vibio and Piegaro in the Province of Perugia, and San Venanzo in the Province of Terni, in the Umbria region.
Description of product typologies
Colli Perugini PDO Bianco is straw-yellow, varying in depth; the nose displays floral and fruity notes, which are accompanied by sweet buttery sensations in more structured wines; it is predominantly fresh and sapid on the palate. Colli Perugini PDO Rosso is ruby red, varying in intensity; the nose displays hints of red berries which are supported by good minerality; it is fresh and tart on the palate, with fruity undertones. Colli Perugini PDO Rosato is pink, varying in intensity; the nose is delicately vinous; it is dry, harmonious and fresh the palate. Colli Perugini PDO Spumante is straw-yellow, varying in intensity, with fine foam; the nose displays pleasantly fruity and persistent fragrances; it is dry, harmonious, elegant and dense on the palate. Colli Perugini PDO Spumante must be obtained through fermentation in autoclaves or in the bottle, without the addition of carbon dioxide. Colli Perugini PDO Vino Santo or Vin Santo ranges from straw-yellow to amber-yellow; the nose is ethereal, intense and aromatic; it is harmonious on the palate, ranging from dry to sweet, with hints of honey and vanilla. Colli Perugini PDO Novello is cherry-red, at times tending towards purple; the nose is fresh with fruity notes and hints which are characteristic of young wines; it is velvety and lively on the palate with fruity notes. Grapes destined for the production of Vino Santo or Vin Santo wines must have undergone a drying period that ends no later than March 31st of the year following that in which the grapes were harvested. Initial dehydration with un-heated ventilated air is permitted. Vino Santo or Vin Santo wines must be produced in wooden barrels with a capacity of no more than 350 litres.
Grape variety specifications
The Colli Perugini PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties (incl. Spumante): min. 85% Chardonnay, Grechetto, Pinot Grigio, Trebbiano, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.

The Colli Perugini PDO designation can be followed by the specification Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym.
