The Colli Martani PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red and Spumante. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Colli Martani PDO is within the entire territory of the municipalities of Gualdo Cattaneo and Giano dell’Umbria and parts of Todi, Massa Martana, Monte Castello Vibio, Montefalco, Castel Ritaldi, Spoleto, Bevagna, Cannara, Bettona, Deruta and Collazzone in the Province of Perugia, in the Umbria region.
Description of product typologies
Colli Martani PDO Bianco is pale straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the fruity and floral notes on the nose are enriched by traces of minerals; it is fleshy and predominantly sapid and fresh on the palate. Colli Martani PDO Rosso is ruby red, varying in intensity; the sensations of red fruit and violets on the nose are supported by delicate tannins and good minerality; the freshness and acidity on the palate are accompanied by an almondy finish. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone a minimum ageing period of 2 years, at least one year of which must be in wooden barrels and the remaining time must be spent maturing in the bottle. Colli Martani PDO Spumante is straw-yellow, varying in intensity, with a fine and persistent perlage; the nose displays an intense and fruity fragrance; it is dry, harmonious and decisive on the palate.
Grape variety specifications
The Colli Martani PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Trebbiano, Grechetto, Grechetto di Todi, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Riesling, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%; Malvasia Bianca di Candia and Malvasia Bianca Lunga grape varieties, pure or combined, must not exceed 10% of the total additional grape varieties. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot (incl. Riserva), Vernaccia Nera, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin. Colli Martani PDO Vernaccia wine must be obtained from carefully chosen grapes which have dried on the vines and/or in suitable environments; partial dehydration with ventilated air or forced ventilation in thermal conditioned areas is permitted. Colli Martani PDO Sangiovese can only be released for consumption after it has undergone a mandatory maturation period of at least one year, commencing October 31st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Colli Martani PDO Cabernet Sauvignon and Colli Martani PDO Merlot can be released for consumption after they have undergone a mandatory maturation period of at least 1 year, commencing October 31st of the year in which the grapes were harvested.
