The Colli Maceratesi PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Spumante, Passito and Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Colli Maceratesi PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Macerata and the municipality of Loreto in the Province of Ancona, in The Marches region.
Description of product typologies
Colli Maceratesi PDO Bianco is pale straw-yellow; it is intense and persistent on the nose, with hints of exotic fruit, at times ripe, baked and spicy fruit, honey and chamomile; it is dry, fresh and smooth on the palate, intense and persistent. Colli Maceratesi PDO Rosso is deep ruby red, brighter in the first year and tending towards garnet red with ageing; the nose opens intensely with moderately spicy aromas, followed by persistent sensations of liqueur red fruit and subtle floral notes; it is dry and rich on the palate, tending to smoothen with age and acquire flavours of ripe fruit, and has a persistent, sapid finish. It can display Riserva on the label. Colli Maceratesi PDO Spumante is pale straw-yellow, with a fine and persistent perlage; the nose is pleasant with slightly fruity fragrances; it is dry and pleasantly acidulous on the palate. Colli Maceratesi PDO Spumante must be obtained exclusively from natural secondary fermentation with at least 3 months on the lees. The production process must last at least 6 months. Colli Maceratesi PDO Passito ranges from straw-yellow to amber-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose offers intense fragrances which are typical of dried grapes; it is sweet, harmonious and velvety on the palate. Grapes destined for the production of Passito wine must have undergone a drying period that commences October 15th of the year in which the grapes were harvested. The dried grapes must then be mashed before March 31st of the year following that in which the grapes were harvested. Colli Maceratesi PDO Novello is ruby red; the nose offers fragrant, fine and characteristic aromas; it is smooth, velvety and harmonious on the palate. This wine must be obtained with the carbonic maceration of at least 50% of the grapes. Colli Maceratesi PDO Rosso Riserva and Passito wines can only be released for consumption after an ageing period of 24 months, 3 of which must be in wood, commencing December 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced.

The Colli Maceratesi PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties (incl. Spumante, Passito): min. 85% Ribona, with the possible addition of other white grape varieties, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Sangiovese, with the possible addition of other unaromatic black grape varieties, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
