The Colli d’Imola PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, White Superiore, Semi-Sparkling White, Red, Red Riserva and Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Colli d’Imola PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Fontanelice, Borgo Tossignano, Casalfiumanese, Imola, Dozza, Castel San Pietro Terme and Ozzano dell’Emilia, in the Province of Bologna, in the Emilia-Romagna region.
Description of product typologies
Colli d’Imola PDO Bianco is straw-yellow in colour; it displays fruity and floral fragrances on the nose; the flavour is relative to the various types, ranging from dry, supple, sweet and mouth-filling. It can also be produced as Frizzante and Superiore wine. Colli d’Imola PDO Rosso is ruby-red in colour, tending towards garnet with ageing; it is intense and vinous on the nose; the flavour on the palate is dry, mouth-filling or supple, and sweet, depending on the typology. It may display Riserva on the label if it has undergone a mandatory ageing period of at least 18 months, of which 2 months must be in wooden barrels. The ageing period commences November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Colli d’Imola PDO Novello Rosso is ruby-red in colour; it displays a fruity, intense and vinous fragrance on the nose; the palate is dry, rounded, sapid and harmonious.
Grape variety specifications
The Colli d’Imola PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties (incl. Semi-Sparkling): min. 85% Trebbiano, Chardonnay, pure or with the addition of other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Sangiovese (incl. Riserva), Barbera (incl. Semi-Sparkling), Cabernet Sauvignon (incl. Riserva), pure or with the addition of other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
