The Colli del Sangro PGI is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé (incl. semi-sparkling), White Passito, Red Passito, Red Novello and Rosé Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.

The production area of Colli del Sangro PGI is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Chieti, in the Abruzzo region.
Description of product typologies
Colli del Sangro PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow; it offers varying degrees of fruity fragrances on the nose, based on the various grape varieties used; it is dry and sapid on the palate, with a slightly fruity flavour and good persistence. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Colli del Sangro PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby red; the nose is delicate, displaying characteristic fragrances of red fruit and aromatic elegance deriving from the grape varieties used; it is dry and sapid on the palate, at times with evident tannins, with good body. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Colli del Sangro PGI Rosato, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink, varying in intensity; it displays delicate fruity fragrances on the nose; it is dry, harmonious and fresh on the palate, with the characteristics of the grape variety of origin. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Colli del Sangro PGI Passito Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is yellow, tending towards amber with ageing; it displays intense fruity notes on the nose; it is dry and sapid on the palate, with the characteristics of the grape variety of origin. Colli del Sangro PGI Passito Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is red to garnet red, varying in intensity; it is intense on the nose with the characteristic notes of the grape variety used; it is harmonious, sweet and velvety on the palate. Colli del Sangro PGI Novello Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby red, with faint purple reflections; its fragrance is pleasantly fruity; it is fresh and velvety on the palate. Colli del Sangro PGI Novello Rosato, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink, varying in intensity; it is pleasantly fruity on the nose; it is fresh and velvety on the palate.
Grape variety specifications
The Colli del Sangro PGI with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Abruzzo region, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. A maximum of 15% of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. The Colli del Sangro Protected Geographical Indication with specification of two grape varieties is reserved for wines obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of the corresponding varieties, on the condition that the wine derives exclusively from grapes produced by the two specified varieties; the quantity of grapes produced by each of the two varieties must in any case be greater than 15% of the total and the grape variety specifications must appear on the label in descending order with respect to the actual percentage of grapes obtained from them. Colli del Sangro PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
