Description
The Colli Bolognesi PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Semi-Sparkling Red, Red Riserva (all only with specification of the grape variety or sub-area) and Spumante (only with indication of the sub-area). The Designation also incorporates one geographical specification.
Production Area
The production area of Colli Bolognesi PDO is within the entire territory of the municipalities of Monte San Pietro, Sasso Marconi, Marzabotto, Pianoro and parts of the municipalities of Valsamoggia, Casalecchio di Reno, Bologna, S. Lazzaro di Savena, Zola Predosa, Monterenzio in the Province of Bologna, and parts of the municipality of Savignano sul Panaro in the Province of Modena, in the Emilia-Romagna region.

Geographical and sub-area specifications
The Colli Bolognesi PDO can be accompanied by the Colli Bolognesi PDO Bologna geographical sub-designation. This wine is produced in the hilly areas in the muncipalities of Valsamoggia and Monte San Pietro, and parts of the municipalities of Bologna, Marzabotto, Pianoro, Casalecchio di Reno, Sasso Marconi, S. Lazzaro di Savena, Zola Predosa, in the Province of Bologna, and those in the Municipality of Savignano sul Panaro in the Province of Modena. The Colli Bolognesi PDO Bologna designation incorporates White, Red (incl. Riserva) and Spumante wines, produced and obtained from grapes that are typical of the terroir of origin. Colli Bolognesi PDO Bologna Rosso wine can display Riserva on the label following a minimum ageing period of 36 months, of which at least 5 months must be maturing in the bottle, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested. The vinification, ageing and bottling of Colli Bolognesi PDO Bologna wines must be carried out within the production area.
Grape variety specifications
Colli Bolognesi PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco, Riesling Italico, Chardonnay, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromaticgrapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Barbera (incl. Semi-Sparkling, Riserva), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromaticgrapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety. Colli Bolognesi PDO Barbera wines can only display Riserva on the label if they are released for consumption after an ageing period of at least 36 months, of which at least 5 months must be maturing in the bottle, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced.
