The Colli Berici PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Spumante, Spumante Rosé and Passito. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety and geographical specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Colli Berici PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Vicenza, in the Veneto region.
Description of product typologies
Colli Berici PDO Bianco is pale straw-yellow; the nose is delicate, with notes of ripe white fruit; it is dry and harmonious on the palate. It can also be Spumante or Superiore wine. Colli Berici PDO Bianco Superiore can only be released for consumption from March 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were harvested. Colli Berici PDO Rosso is ruby red tending towards garnet red with ageing; it is intense on the nose, with fruity hints of berries; it is fairly dry on the palate, harmonious, full and velvety. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone a mandatory ageing period of at least 24 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. It can also be Superiore wine. Colli Berici PDO Rosso Superiore can only be released for consumption from September 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were harvested. Colli Berici PDO Spumante Metodo Classico is straw-yellow, varying in depth, with fine, persistent foam; the nose is elegant with a delicate hint of yeast and notes of flowers and unripe fresh fruit; it is typical on the palate, vivacious, harmonious and full, ranging from extra brut to demi-sec. It can display Millesimato on the label. For Colli Berici PDO Spumante Metodo Classico Millesimato wines it is mandatory that at least 85% of wine from the year of reference is used, with at least 30 months on the lees. Colli Berici PDO Spumante Metodo Classico, including Rosato or Rosé, must remain on the lees for at least 15 months; this period commences from the day of the tirage, but not before January 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were harvested. A mixture of wines from different years can be used to make the base wine. Colli Berici PDO Spumante Rosé is pink, varying in intensity, with a fine and persistent perlage; the nose is elegant, ample and complex, with delicate hints of yeast and berries; it is typical, lively and harmonious on the palate, ranging from extra-brut to demi-sec, and medium-bodied. Colli Berici PDO Passito is golden yellow; it is vinous, intense and persistent on the nose; it has a sweet flavour of ripe fruit. The grapes used for the production of Colli Berici PDO Passito must have been slightly dried naturally and the wine cannot be released for consumption before September 1st of the year following that of the harvest.
Geographical and sub-area specifications
The Colli Berici PDO Tai can be called Colli Berici PDO Barbarano if produced with red Tai grapes originating from vineyards situated within the territory of the municipalities of Longare, Castegnero, Villaga, Barbarano Vicentino, Mossano and Nanto. Colli Berici PDO Barbarano is produced exclusively as a red wine, including Spumante Brut, Extra-dry, Dry and Demi-sec or Abboccato wines. Riserva may be displayed on the label if the wine has undergone a mandatory ageing period of at least 24 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Colli Berici PDO Barbarano is produced with red Tai grapes originating from the vineyards of just one producer.

The Colli Berici PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Garganego/a, Tai (from Friulano grapes), Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Manzoni Bianco, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Pinot Nero, Merlot, Tai Rosso (incl. Spumante made with red Tocai grapes), Cabernet (Franc and/or Sauvignon and/or Carmenère, incl. Riserva), Cabernet Sauvignon (incl. Riserva), Cabernet Franc (incl. Riserva), Carmenère (incl. Riserva), pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%.
