Description
The Colli Altotiberini PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Spumante and Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Colli Altotiberini PDO is within all or parts of the territory of the municipalities of Perugia, San Giustino, Citerna, Città di Castello, Monte S. Maria Tiberina, Montone, Umbertide and Gubbio in the Province of Perugia, in the Umbria region.
Description of product typologies
Colli Altotiberini PDO Bianco is pale straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose displays floral fragrances of broom flower and fruity aromas of white plum and cut grass; it is fresh and sapid on the palate, with a well-balanced fruity finish. Colli Altotiberini PDO Rosso is intense ruby red; the nose reveals fragrances of blueberry and blackberry, which blend with notes of mild spices and cocoa; it is embracing and sapid on the palate, with fruity undertones. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone a mandatory ageing period of at least 24 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested. Colli Altotiberini PDO Rosato is vinous and delicate on the nose; it is fresh and dry on the palate. Colli Altotiberini PDO Spumante is pale straw-yellow with a thin perlage; the nose displays fruity and floral notes; it is lively and fresh on the palate. Colli Altotiberini PDO Spumante must be obtained through fermentation in autoclaves or in the bottle, without the addition of carbon dioxide. Colli Altotiberini PDO Novello is bright cherry-red tending towards purple; the nose is fruity and fresh; the fruity notes and velvety aromas of cherry and blackberry of the nose return on the palate. Colli Altotiberini PDO Bianco Superiore cannot be released for consumption before March 31st of the year following that in which the grapes were harvested.
Grape variety specifications
The Colli Altotiberini PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Grechetto, Trebbiano, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties (incl. Riserva): min. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin. Colli Altotiberini PDO Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese can only qualify as Riserva wines if they have undergone a mandatory ageing period of at least 24 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested.
