Production Area
The production area of Circeo PDO is within parts of the territory of the municipalities of Latina, Sabaudia, San Felice Circeo and Terracina in the Province of Latina, in the Lazio region.
Description of product typologies
Circeo PDO Bianco is pale straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose offers notes of hawthorn flowers, aromatic herbs and mineral tones; a sapid note on the palate is supported by fresh, citrus fruitiness. Circeo PDO Rosso has a solid ruby red colour, varying in intensity; traces of blueberry jam, grilled peppers and brushwood stand out on the nose; it is intense and fresh on the palate, with salty and mineral hints. It can also be semi-sparkling and Novello wine. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone a mandatory ageing period of at least 2 years, 6 months of which must be in wooden barrels, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Circeo PDO Rosato is pink, varying in intensity, with purple reflections; it is elegant and pleasant on the nose, with characteristic fruity notes; it is dry or semi-sweet, harmonious, delicate and velvety on the palate. It can also be semi-sparkling wine. Circeo PDO Spumante is straw-yellow with greenish reflections; the nose displays fragrant aromas of almond and bread crust; it is lively and harmonious on the palate. Circeo PDO Novello is ruby red, varying in intensity, with purplish hues; the nose is fruity, persistent and characteristic; the harmonious and balanced palate stands out for its freshness and vivacity.
Grape variety specifications
The Circeo PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Trebbiano, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Sangiovese, Merlot, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%.
