The Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo PDO is reserved for Rosé wines and Rosé Superiore wines with a sub-area specification. The Designation also includes four geographical specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the provinces of Chieti, L’Aquila, Pescara and Teramo, in the Abruzzo region.
Description of product typologies
Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo PDO is cherry-pink, varying in intensity; the nose is pleasant, delicately vinous, fruity, elegant and intense; it is dry, smooth, harmonious and delicate on the palate, at times with a pleasant almondy aftertaste. Grapes used in the production of Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo PDO can be white vinified, that is, with the skin, for a limited period of fermentation, in order to give the wine its characteristic cherry-pink colour. Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo PDO wine cannot be released for consumption before December 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced.
Geographical and sub-area specifications
The Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo PDO Rosato Superiore version of Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo Protected Designation of Origin wine can be accompanied by four geographical sub-areas: Cerasuolo d 'Abruzzo PDO Terre di Chieti, produced in a few municipalities in the Province of Chieti; Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo PDO Terre Aquilane or Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo PDO Terre de L’Aquila, produced in a few municipalities in the Province of L'Aquila; Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo PDO Colline Pescaresi, produced in a few municipalities in the Province of Pescara; Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo PDO Colline Teramane, produced in a few municipalities in the Province of Teramo. The Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo PDO Terre di Chieti Rosato Superiore can be accompanied by four additional geographical units. Cerasuolo d 'Abruzzo PDO wines with specification of the sub-area and the specification Superiore must be obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 90% of the Montepulciano grape variety; a maximum of 10% may be comprised of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Abruzzo region. Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo PDO Superiore with specification of the sub-area must undergo a mandatory ageing period of at least five months, commencing November 1st of the year the grapes were produced in. Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo PDO Superiore with specification of the sub-area cannot be released for consumption before April 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced.
