Production Area
The production area of Castel San Lorenzo PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Castel San Lorenzo, Bellosguardo, Felitto, and parts of the territory of the municipalities of Aquara, Castelcivita, Roccadaspide, Magliano Vetere and Ottati, in the Province of Salerno, in the Campania region.
Description of product typologies
Castel San Lorenzo PDO Bianco is deep straw-yellow; the intense fragrances of yellow fleshy fruit and flowers on the nose are supported by aromatic notes with slight balsamic traces; it is rich and complex on the palate, with a tart persistence and a long fruity finish. Castel San Lorenzo PDO Rosso is intense ruby red; the nose reveals fragrances of ripe cherry and black berries, entwined with sensations of balsamic, brushwood and cocoa; it is dry, slightly acidulous, harmonious and tannic on the palate. Castel San Lorenzo PDO Rosato is pink, varying in intensity; it is vinous and subtle on the nose, with a characteristic fragrance; it is dry on the palate, tending towards smooth, delicate, slightly acidulous, velvety and harmonious. The organoleptic properties of Castel San Lorenzo PDO Spumante and Castel San Lorenzo PDO Passito wines with specification of grape variety are typical of the grapes and terroir of origin.
Grape variety specifications
The Castel San Lorenzo PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Moscato (incl. Spumante, Passito, Lambiccato), Moscato Bianco, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties (incl. Riserva): min. 85% Barbera, Aglianicone, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin. Castel San Lorenzo PDO Passito must be produced with grapes that have been dried naturally, entirely or partially, on the vines or after harvesting, in order to ensure a minimum natural alcohol level of 16% vol. For this type of wine, the total alcohol level cannot be increased through the concentration of the must or wine, or through the use of previously concentrated musts or wines. The use of the Lambiccato (distilled) qualification is permitted. This sweet wine is golden yellow; it displays intense varietal fragrances on the nose and bursts with notes of honey, dry figs and prune; it is sweet, velvety and harmonious on the palate. Castel San Lorenzo PDO Barbera and Castel San Lorenzo PDO Aglianicone wines can display Riserva on the label if they have undergone a minimum ageing period of 2 years, of which 6 months must be in wooden barrels; the ageing period commences November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Castel San Lorenzo PDO Aglianicone cannot be released for consumption before April 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were harvested.
