Production Area
The production area of Casteggio PDO is within the hilly area of the municipality of Casteggio, as well the bordering municipalities of Borgo Priolo, Corvino San Quirico, Montebello della Battaglia, Calvignano, Oliva Gessi and Torrazza Coste in the Province of Pavia, in the Lombardy region.
Description of product typologies
Casteggio PDO is ruby red with purple reflections; it is complex on the nose, with fragrances of fresh red fruit and notes of rosemary; it is balanced on the palate, with thin tannins. It can display Riserva on the label if it has undergone a minimum ageing period of three years, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested. Casteggio PDO must undergo a mandatory maturing period of at least 24 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced, of which at least 12 months is mandatory ageing in oak barrels and at least 6 months maturing in the bottle before being released for consumption. Vinification, maturing and mandatory ageing must be carried out within the production area; however, these operations may also be carried out in the entire Province of Pavia, as well as in the districts of Vicobarone and Casa Bella in the Municipality of Ziano Piacentino, in the Province of Piacenza.
