The Carso or Carso-Kras PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White (only with specification of grape variety) and Red. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Carso PDO or Carso-Kras PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Trieste, Duino-Aurisina, Monrupino, Muggia, San Dorligo della Valle and Sgonico in the Province of Trieste, the Municipality of Doberdò del Lago and parts of the municipalities of Monfalcone, Ronchi dei Legionari, Fogliano-Redipuglia, Sagrado and Savogna d’Isonzo in the Province of Gorizia, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
Description of product typologies
Carso PDO or Carso-Kras PDO Bianco, with the specification of grape variety, has the colour, aromas and taste of the grape variety. Carso PDO or Carso-Kras PDO Rosso has an intense ruby-red colour; it is vinous and characteristic on the nose; on the palate it is dry, full-bodied and harmonious. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone a mandatory ageing period of at least 24 months, of which at least 12 months must be in wooden barrels. The ageing period commences November 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested.
Grape variety specifications
The Carso PDO or Carso-Kras PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Chardonnay, Glera, Malvasia (from Malvasia Istriana), Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Traminer, Vitovska, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Terrano (incl. Classico), pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. Carso or Carso-Kras Merlot, Carso or Carso-Kras Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Carso or Carso-Kras Terrano and Carso or Carso-Kras Terrano Classico PDO wines must have undergone a mandatory ageing period of at least 24 months, of which at least 12 months must be in wooden barrels, and five months maturing in the bottle The ageing period commences November 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested. Carso PDO or Carso-Kras PDO Malvasia (from Malvasia Istriana), Carso PDO or Carso-Kras PDO Sauvignon, Carso PDO or Carso-Kras PDO Vitovska can display Riserva on the label if they have undergone a mandatory ageing period of at least 20 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested.
